EU Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States against five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures that were central to campaigns to enact legislation governing American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the move.

The bans were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities argue the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This row threatens to become a facet of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.
